TRIGGER WARNING, don't read if you can't handle the sugar: Awww, Wednesday, how do I regret thee, let me count the ways: 1) Klondike Heath bar 2) THREE rice crispie squares, I made those for the KIDS, not me 3) TWO homemade oatmeal/flax/peanut butter energy balls, I made those for the KIDS, not me, although I do so love them, with the fire of a thousand suns how I love them 4)countless repeated zombie-trance-like sips of grape-apple juice my son rejected after track practice, because I can't let anything go to waste, right?...

I realize that much of my continued struggle with sugar has to do with... just having kids in the house, and keeping them properly sugared up. I've been making an effort to get more veg and protein into their diets too, sneaking food-processored zucchini and carrots into their soups and lasagnas and spaghettis, making homemade baked chicken strips vs frozen franken-nuggets, adding flax to brownie mix, substituting applesauce for oil in baked goods, cutting a fresh fruit plate most days...

We've really made progress in the past 2 years, I can see just from my compost pile, we are moving the fruits and veg, man! ... but more work to be done on the sugar front. They love sugar, and they love me for giving it to them, I'm like Santa Claus, or the Sugar Fairy, showing up with bags and bags of it... needs work...

Sugar-trance Wednesday, you are in the past. Today is THURSDAY. I'm determined to construct a really great Thursday, healthy and active and FUN!!

Yesterday I sat on a grassy hillside and watched my son's high school track meet. The sun warmed my back, and the wind swirled the leaves in funny little dancing circles at my feet... young people were everywhere, talking, laughing, stretching, running, preening...all sizes and shapes, some of them impossibly long and lean, like gazelles, they make running look so easy, effortless, light, barely touching the ground, they run ABOVE the ground... I felt a twinge of regret. I wanted to be 15 again. I wanted a do-over. I wanted to be an athletic 15 yr old, instead of the bookish, backwards, eating-disordered 15 yr old I was. I had a tiny little pity party, and then shook it off and said to myself, hey, better late than never. Thanks GOD I can still run, maybe not above the ground, maybe not effortlessly, maybe a bit clunky and ankle-snappy, but I can get it moving.

It was so sunny and warm yesterday, I got a HUGE energy buzz from turbo training, lost my mind and decided to take the animals, 2 dogs, 1 mini-horse, for a walk down the hollow... BY MYSELF! which meant I had 3 leads to deal with, with a maniac at the end of each, weaving through briars, underbrush, and 14,000 trees to get down to the gravel road... it was such a challenge, the dogs kept splitting and running all over the place, wrapping around different trees, the horse was freaking out, trying to snatch up tiny bits of fresh spring grass here and there, dropping and rolling in the leaves, bucking and kicking at me... she was WILD. I was split in 3 directions, but it was so much fun! When we got to the road, they were a little easier to handle, but the dogs kept walking in front of the horse, and she would reach down and try to bite their butts, she's so rotten, I love her.. I can't wait to try it again! Maybe go out in the woods first, and clear the path a little...

Incredible how much my life has changed... I thought I was done, I was in a downslide, turned 50 in August and just sorta slowed down, sat on the sidelines, literally, joined the oldsters... I had no energy. Nothing much seemed fun, if it took physical effort, blechhhhh... My best friend came out to celebrate my birthday and took me to the township fair. We looked at the farm animals, we ate greasy fries, we rode 2 rides, and I was POOPED!! I wanted to sit in the big tent with the old people and watch the band, or play Bingo!! I was ready to go home!! I want that night back. I want a do-over. Things have changed. We joined the gym in January and have been going 3-4 times/week. I've been doing work-out videos on the off-days, or taking walks in the woods with the dogs and the mini-horse... This is the most active I've ever been in my life, with possible exception of when I was 9... This weekend flew by so fast, went to the gym, walked the horse and dogs, took the kids bowling, and challenged my son to keep up with me on some turbulence training videos. He quit after 8 minutes and declared it was too easy. Hmmm...
