Late night last night. I needed to pick up some friends at the Airport at 1am which would normally not be too bad, but the snow made it a harrowing journey.

I know. I know. All you folks in places that normally get snow think Seattleites are wimps when it comes to snow. I too was like you once. When I first moved to Seattle from Canada I really didn’t understand it – how can a city shutdown from an inch or two of snow! I have learned since there are a couple of reasons:

1. Seattle has a lot of hills (the news cameras setup at the bottom of these hills during every snow storm to get pictures of cars coming down sideways and bouncing around).
2. Seattle does not have nearly enough plows for the roads (I suspect my home town of 21k people in Canada has twice the number of snow plows as the greater Seattle area with 1M people)
3. Seattle is warm enough that most snow storms start out as rain storms – meaning all of the de-icer that is spread on the roads beforehand is washed away
4. No one has snow tires
5. We have way too many Californian (and other temperate parts of the world) transplants that have no idea how to drive in snow

That makes for one heck of a mess on the roads. Most arterials are fine now, but I still have to put chains on my car to get up my local road. Over the last couple years I have gotten pretty good at putting on and taking off the chains.

So back to the airport story: Not only did I have to drive through snow, but the bloody airline (United) ended up losing my friend’s luggage and we had to wait around for an hour at the airport while they filed a report and tried to find a car seat we could use for their toddler. To add insult to injury, my friends had paid a $50 bag fee – and the baggage claim attendant said it was not company policy to refund the luggage fee if the bags were lost!!!

Anyhow, ended up getting home at 3am and at least got a few hours sleep. Hopefully today will be a bit smoother.
