Completed 5 day water fast and 1st day of 2 day re-feed. Urine remained clear until final day of fast when it started to turn a little yellow. Drank more water and cleared again. Gentle LCHF re-feed has been smooth so far. No intestinal trouble and no strong hunger once re-feed commenced. Small quantities of food have been very well tolerated, beginning with 1/8 cup every 2 hours and currently at 1 cup every 3-4 hours.

Today waking Fasting Blood Glucose = 107 (monitor lists 91-114 as normal range).
Waking fasting Blood Ketones = 1.5

Those numbers seem to indicate success with the water fast accelerating the transition to burning ketones rather than glucose, but the glucose reading is still too high to indicate true keto-adaptation if I understand correctly how this works. That will probably have to come over time, perhaps with exercise.

For now I'm grateful for the jumpstart the 5 day water fast gave me. Five days was probably the perfect length of time for me. Long enough to give me a quick start physically and a psychological boost as well from seeing some measurable results relatively quickly. But not too long. I think starting at 4 pm made a positive difference because it allowed me to divide the first 24 hours in half with sleep which helped both with getting over the initial hunger-hump and the psychological first-day hump as well.

I did not experience the "plagues" (head sores, muscle cramps, heart palpitations, acne, tooth plaques, crankiness, gallbladder tenderness, pancreas tenderness, loose bowels, etc.) I have had in the past when beginning a ketogenic diet. Those were very severe the first time I did keto but each resolved quickly as I continued. I assume my immune system triumphed. This time there were no plagues other than a few hours of very mild pancreatic tenderness, ankle itching as swelling reduced, tender varicose veins, mild headaches, and a handful of sudden shooting pains followed by a feeling of warmth and a rush in my veins. That last felt like something released. It occurred in my arm, a leg, and repeatedly in my torso. It was startling for just a moment and then it passed and I felt good afterwards. I did have three incidents of leg cramps and one of heart palpitations which were easily resolved by drinking salt water. I also did not experience any crankiness or emotional ups and downs despite there being several significant agitators that in the past would have upset and derailed me. I did find I slept a little more than usual the first two days of the fast but not excessively. Mental clarity remained good.
