So my saga for these last ten pounds continues. My weight is up two pounds since my last weigh in (so a bit under 189) but this isn't really a surprise as I have been in this range for 2 months now. At least with the diet plan that Cindy suggested I am eating more calories. I believe, based on the anecdotal evidence of the weights I'm lifting, this has led to me building muscle as opposed to just maintaining it. My lifts to failure and max weight lifts have gone up by about 5% to 10% in the last month. Prior to that I had been at a plateau for the last 4 months.

So, overall that is a good thing. However, I am not realizing my weight loss (and therefore body fat percentage) goal. To rectify this I'm going to try something a little radical. I'm cutting all refined sugars. No more doughnuts, white breads (gods I'm going to miss sourdough), random sweets, ice cream, frozen yogurt, or artificial sweeteners such as sucralose or aspartame (I have been guilty of having diet sodas recently). Any sweeteners I have to use will be stevia, honey, and fruit. Hopefully this dietary change will provide a kick in the right direction. At the very least I've been reading that high insulin levels can have a detrimental impact on muscle development and cardiovascular system improvement so I should see better gains in those areas (honey and fruit not providing enough sugar for the insulin levels to jump much and stevia doesn't cause insulin production at all, apparently). At least I'm not diabetic or I'd have to be really worried about this.

My exercise routine is still on target. I burn about 5000 kcals a week from exercise alone and spend about 5 to 6 hours exercising. The last couple of weeks I've done less running since my dog has an injured paw (and so we play tug of war to get him some exercise instead. I think he actually prefers it, the lazy mutt). He appears to be largely healed up so we'll be back out and jogging shortly.

I hope everyone has had a good week so far. At the very least I hope the weekend is kind, even if the week isn't. :)

I wish my dog preferred tug-of-war to running. He's more like an Energizer bunny on crack - if he doesn't get his run, he's bouncing off walls. Yesterday he went on 2 runs with my hubby along the side of a bicycle - that's 4 miles total, and then I walked with him for another couple of miles. That's 6 miles and he was still running around the house all night long. Oh, if I could bottle some of his energy and use it as a supplement for me, LOL. I can just see it in a supplement aisle - "Pit Bull Energy" with a snazzy picture of my dog. Did you mention anywhere how tall you are? Because with all that muscle you're building, your body may be happy with the weight you are fluctuating around for these past few weeks. What's important is how you feel. If you feel good, doing what you're doing now, then hell with the scale!

Nina, 5'8" tall. I agree with the sentiment about to Hell with the scale. However, I'm really targeting a particular body fat percentage (14%) and assuming I don't build some pretty Herculean muscles I'll need to drop about 10 to 15 lbs of body fat to get that. Losing weight is the most direct solution, but if I find that bulking up paves the way I'll happily do that instead. :) Now, regarding the energy level of the dog, mine needs to get a few miles in. He's about 80 lbs or so now, but when he was younger/smaller he had a lot more energy.

LOL, I'm hoping mine will mellow out a bit too when he's a bit older. He's a 60 lbs - 20 month old pit/lab mix, so I'm not really holding my breath for him getting too mellow. But even a little less energy would be easier on me. Wow - 14% body fat, that's a lofty goal. I'm sure you'll get there one way or another.

You are making some good sense there wintersmith, I don't think those last ten will take you too much longer now.

Your plan of attack makes me a little jealous! I can't wait to be back on it! Good luck with everything and I will definitely be taking a page out of your book when the doctor says that I can.

Hey, I'm trying something radical too! Let's hope this crazyness works out for both of us.
