Back in January (and nearly 50 pounds heavier) I was struggling to complete a half mile walk without huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf. I set a goal then that by the end of the summer I would be able to complete the 7.5 mile hiking trail around the reservoir at the near by state park.

Pretty much every decent weather Sunday since then the better half and I have gone to the park and walked part of the trail some days as little as a quarter mile in and back from the start, some days as much as two miles in but always something.

This past Sunday we decided to make our first attempt at actually completing the entire trail and am happy to report we have successfully accomplished that goal.

My next goal is to be able to run a 5K (and I have never enjoyed running) without walking and I've been working on that since early May. I found the cool running's couch to 5k running plan where you progress from not running to being able to run a 5k in 9 weeks. Being on a beta blocker after having had a heart attack sometimes makes it difficult as my heart rate is limited to around 150 bpm max so I have to work at being in shape enough to accomplish things at lower heart rates before I can master them. I wasn't able to achieve week one goals when I started so I cut them in half and made a week 0 lol. I spent multiple weeks on each week until I could do all three days that week without failure before moving on and am currently in week 6 and only spent one week in weeks 4 and 5.

Set goals to do things you haven't done. It feels amazing to accomplish them and keeps your mind off the weight loss battle which is good if only for a little bit. Develop healthy habits that continue after the weight is gone, I still make time for the gym, walking or other activities to keep me moving and not revert into my sedentary desires.

Actually you should be running aerobic meaning burning fat instead of sugar. Use the Maffetone rule: 180 - (minus your age) minus 5 beats, is where your heartbeat should be. eg. if you are 40yrs old, you should be running @135 BPM not not 150. in the beginning you will walk, but once your body adapts to exercise. you will be running the 5k easily. Google Aerobic Running, Sock Doc, Prof Maffetone. Good Luck Ofdwolf, you can do it! Aerobic exercise is healthy exercise, especially with your heart history.

Thank you for all the kind words, I am proud of myself and want everyone else to have that feeling too. Thanks for the suggestion Swim I'll check that out, as a novice 50 year old runner I need all the help I can find. I went back and checked my last two runs and my heart rate stayed around 140 for both the 20 minute straight run and during the run 5 walk 3 run 8 walk 3 run 5 minute interval run @ 6 mph so it's definitely improved.
