This is a photo taken yesterday on our walking group mini bus trip. Most of our group are retired in their 60s ,70's 80's. When we arrived at the Punch bowl,a beauty spot about 20 minutes ride away it was bitterly cold in the strong north wind and freezing snowflakes hitting us on our faces. Someone said lets have a cuppa before the walk, I was so pleased as that was what I was thinking but too afraid to suggest it. So we all went in cafe and had a hot drink. The snow was still falling when we left the cafe and I thought to myself (Oh no, this is not going to be a very pleasant walk). On a previous visit to the Punch bowl it had been raining non stop and you could hardly see more than a few yards in front of you. After about 20 minutes the sun came out which made the walking much more pleasant. The visibility was great and had some great views. During the walk the slower walkers turned back. The rest of us continued walking for about 2 hours in total. Everyone said how much that they had enjoyed it. Trees are just beginning to sprout here in NEW ENGLAND. We're still having the rain and cold. Along the coastline, there is a cold wind coming off the ocean still.

Hi Lily, Your an all weather walker Good for you Buddy, it's very nice to see that you are so dedicated to the group come rain or shine, or else no one would turn up to support them on Miserable Days (they need members like You).....Just love the photo's looks really nice to ramble around (my dogs would love it there), Was it a Quarry at one stage or is that the natural lay of the land?.....Becca P the hedge looks like Gorse I maybe wrong cos its a long way off in the distance!.....BFN Maggy May

Thanks for all your feedback. Maggy is right it is gorse and it looked so beautiful. There are not many leaves on the trees at the moment. The second photo in the rain was taken last year in June. When we plan these trips we have no idea what the weather will be like on the day, we have to book the mini- coach about 6 weeks in advance. We do go out whatever the weather except when it is icy underfoot. --
Here below is what I found out on the internet about the area.
The Devil's Punchbowl is a large hollow of dry sandy heath to the west of Hindhead in southern England.
The hollow is overlooked by the 894 feet Gibbet Hill, the second highest hill in Surrey.
The Punchbowl has a long history and tradition. Legend has it that the devil spent his time tormenting the god Thor by pelting him with enormous handfuls of earth, leaving the great bowl that visitors can see today.
In reality the large depression was created by erosion as water percolated down and hit an impervious layer of clay. A large number of small springs sprung up across the area as the water pressure built up.

Sounds like it was a good day. I hate rain but can take cold & sunny any time. I've had some wonderful December diving weekends where it's been bitterly cold but sunny. Fantastic weather to be outside
