Man. My daughter's first day of Waldspielgruppe. She left home about 30 minutes ago. I'm so nervous. We only speak English at home because husband and I aren't native German speakers, so she is learning all of her German/Swiss German through Spielgruppe. Which I think is great...she's learning to speak it you know...the right way and not the taught way. The immersion way. But, she's only been going one day a week for the last six months, and I'm so worried that she won't be able to follow directions well enough. She only speaks a tiny bit of German at home, but I don't know how much she really knows. For all I know, she's already compartmentalized "English at home, German at Spielgruppe." Still, it's really cute to watch her playing and something goes wrong (blocks fall over or something) and she will mutter, "oohh nein!"

Edit**

She had a great time and did very well. She loved the campfire. Wouldn't keep her mitts or hat on, though.

In other news, last night my Fitbit band broke in half in my sleep. Good job me.

Haha she totally will! They sang it before they took off marching into the woods! :D My husband is Swiss but grew up mostly in the States. His father is from Solothurn area but never spoke once they moved to America because he was so focused on learning English..only at Christmas when he was trying to keep the kids from knowing what the presents were! My husband and all of his siblings all wish their father had spoken German in the home when they were kids..especially since almost everyone has ended up back in Switzerland. I think that is great that your kids get both! Even after two years, I can't speak anything "Swiss" and doctors and such always ask if they should switch to Hochdeutsch. Um, yes please!

Oh man, and then "Bärntüütsch" on top of the other Swiss changes. I never knew "Grüssaccchhhh" greeting was actually "Grüetzi" until I had been living here for over a year. People would say it to me on the street so I just started saying it back, never realising what the "actual" word was haha!

Oh goodness bärn dütsch sounds shocking i'm very sorry to say but ask a bärner and they'll say the same about basler dütsch!!!! My kids do get more english though due to being with me mostly when dad works so trying to encourage more swiss talking at home.

Oh yeah imagine learning bloody retro romanisch!!!! Do you also have to learn french being so close to biel?

If I want to get a job in Biel proper, I'll definitely have to learn French. Luckily, Bern and Solothurn areas are too far and easy to reach by train, so they are always options. I grew up in a small hillbilly town in the US, and my high school only offered Spanish and Latin. It blows my mind that my kids will grow up speaking at least three languages if we stay in this area!

I do have the other, I actually dug through my desk to find it a few hours ago! It's the large band, but if I move it all the way to the tightest setting then it stays on well enough. I have two children. My daughter just turned 3 last month and my son is 20 months old. I actually gave birth to my son in Bern, it was very lovely and much better than my American experience. I was around 8 months pregnant when we move here, and even with the short notice I felt so well taken care of.
