I am home this morning because I will no longer be needed at one of my jobs. I have been a driver and part time caregiver for an older lady. Years ago she had a stroke and half her body was mostly paralized. Now she has no more pain. She no longer has to fear needing to be moved to nursing care. Her worries about this world are over.

An alarm on my phone just popped up a moment ago saying I should be leaving to take her to the doctor.  Sometimes it was quite stressful for me, but I am glad I could help her for her last four years. I didn't realize it was so long until I just stopped to think now.  My husband and kids often told me I really should quit this job so I wouldn't be working so much.  Another person also helped her, but she was concerned about replacing me. I am glad I stayed. I don't feel sad. She always asked me to pray for her when things were rough. I often took her bouquets of my roses. She loved flowers!

I don't think I will look for more work right now. I have enough to keep me busy, and I will make some plans to get to the gym.  All three of my university kids are on spring break. Maybe we can do something fun together! Summer is coming!

What a beautiful bouquet! I'm sure you improved her life for those four years Melissa. So wonderful that you can, and do, give so much of yourself to others. I think it will be great to use some of this free time to do some fun things with your kids and/or carve out some time for yourself. Sending you much love! xxx

Oh, Melissa. As someone who has had loved ones in long term care, the loving caretakers are so rare and amazing. Thank you for being there for her.

Thank you all for your kind words. Often I was asked if I was her daughter, and I'd just say that I was her friend. Mostly I didn't feel like her employee. Something that is totally FS related is the absolute fact that this little lady could never have remained as independent as she was if she had been overweight. She was so careful to stay as strong as possible and not overeat. She was an incredible example of someone who was so strong and determined to make the most of a bad deal. With one hand and arm completely unusable and a leg she could only barely use to support herself, she could never have had the strength to care for herself if she was heavy. Through fall quarter of last year, she was still teaching remotely at a community College.

I am sorry for the loss of your client and friend but she is in a better place now. How blessed she was to have you as her caregiver. Glad that you can spend more time with your children. It’s almost spring— time to reflect, refresh and recharge.

I’m so sorry for your loss, it sounds like you made a huge difference for her and I feel like jobs like that are a lot of work but don’t feel exactly like ‘jobs’ because you’re so invested in the person you’re caring for. I hope you can take some time for yourself to process everything, sending prayers.

Bless you for helping this lady. She needed you and you were there for her. As a retired Critical Care Nurse I wish I could clone thousands of wonderful people like you. Love those flowers.

Being a Stroke Survivor myself, I personally want to thank you for your care and concern for your friend. I understand the relationships. I've had it both ways as caregiver and now as a survivor. On behalf of all Survivors everywhere. Thank You. Now go take care of you and yours. It's time.

awww, i am sorry she has moved on, but i am sure sure she lived a good life, and thank you for helping her at the end. We all should be so lucky as to have a caregiver that puts heart and soul into the role.

Thank you guys so much for your encouragement and understanding. Yesterday I was working at another job, and in the evening just felt so horribly sad and had to have a big cry. The last couple weeks I ended up spending hours with my little lady while she was getting infusions. Although we always talked, she opened up so much and shared a lot about the trauma in her life and her feelings. She was a mental health therapist as well as a professor. I think she particularly needed to have someone hear her and ask questions. I am glad she trusted me not just to help her body, but she knew I was a safe person to listen. I'm working at my sales job today and the next two days, but I am going to take my three girls and maybe one son to visit with my folks next week. We all have a little free time adn a day trip will be good! Blessings to you all. May we have a good day today and focus on what is important in life! Thank you for your kindness!

That's a blessing with God's help you nursed her back to health, now it's time for you to enjoy some Melissatwa time.

I know you will miss your lady, but I know I would choose to die just as she did. Your roses are beautiful; I'm sure their fragrance is drifting all the way up to heaven. I think you're wise not to replace this job, you need to take the time to smell those roses; life is short my friend. Peace and love and joy are what I wish for you and yours. 💖
