On 21 January 2021 I “enrolled” at Fatsecret.co.za and stated that I wanted to lose 30.5 kg. of excess weight. I had no idea of how long it was going to take but I hoped to achieve it before the end of this year. During the first 18.75 weeks I lost 18.7kg or an average of 1kg per week. My average calorie intake since 21 January, when I started, at that stage was less than 950 calories per day. I, to put it lightly, starved my body into submission. After the mentioned period of very rapid weight loss I increased my daily intake and during the last 22 weeks I was (with many ups and downs) able to an average weekly weight loss of approximately 0.5kg per week which it widely regarded as a healthy goal. Today (after 40 weeks of “healthy” eating) I achieved my goal as I weigh in this morning at exactly 90 kg. I intend to adopt this healthy eating as my new lifestyle but, in celebration of occasion of achieving an important goal, I, this morning, had my first single meal (a 10am brunch) of over 1000 calories since I started my dieting journey.

Thank you for the kind comments. Sorry, I don’t know your names and I wouldn’t like to address you by your fatsecret handles. Because of my height (almost 193cm) I have a reasonably high RDI. Your RDI is calculated based on your current weight, height, age and activity level and weight loss goal. I soon found out that I couldn’t rely on the RDI calculated by fatsecret,co,za. Because of what I learned through searching the internet it was no longer important for me to achieve any goal on “minimum calories to lose weight at a preferred pace”. By eating lots of fish (prepared without oil), lots of vegetables, large bowls of salads mixed with fruit/avocado/feta/ Mackerel/Tuna, beef/soya/vegetable stew or chicken/vegetable stew my average calorie count went up from 917 calories to only 1150 but my food consumption (by weight) went up A LOT. I learned that I should eat enough to prevent food cravings between meals. I also discovered that I could reach my macro (protein/carbs/fibre) goals without necessarily reaching the calorie limit. Because there are so many good sugars (in fruits) and fats (avocados, eggs, nuts) that are essential for proper nutrition I tried to reduce only the added sugars and saturated fats in my meals..
