Question: when you go out to eat (planned in advance), do you guesstimate the calories, or just not record calories for that day?

My kids are taking me out this weekend for an early birthday celebration, which includes supper at an Italian restaurant. I'm not sure what I can eat there, so it will likely be a salad or spaghetti marinara.

I always guesstimate. If it were me, I'd eat lightly for a couple of days so that I could enjoy anything on the menu guilt-free. Have fun! 💜💛💚

I look online for a menu (some have calories) figure out what to have and then record that. if I can find the calories, I find something close to it (at another restaurant that I can record)

Congrats on having such a great celebration planned. Enjoy it and please don't over think it. Rule of thumb is a serving is a fistful but heartily enjoy the salad bar without going overboard on the dressings or mayo based "salads". Dessert: give yourself kudos for having a birthday and enjoy a slice of whatever and a scoop of ice cream! You can always cut back the following week!

I don't care about calories at all. If you worry about calories, you will not be able to enjoy your meals. Dieting can be done at any time, but I personally think that celebratory meals are a highly valuable thing that we don't have often. ▽°|b✨

When I know in advance exactly where I'll be dining, I try to check out their website for a nutrition page. If they don't have one on-line I will call the restaurant and ask if they have one in-house that I could look at, or see if it can be emailed to me. If no nutrition information is available, I will usually wait until after my meal, to match it as closely as possible with other restaurant's information for the same or similar dish.

If I can't find nutrition info I guestimate high using something similar in the FS database. Then I adjust after if I think I should but that helps me pre-plan. If I want to go over a little I will eat less the next day or even a few days before because it's always easier to bank a few calories and eat less before than it is after the fact. But, if you eat more don't sweat it. As long as you get right back on track after you will be fine. Don't tell yourself you blew it so you might as well eat what you want the rest of the time. Instead exercise portion control. Take leftovers home to enjoy again tomorrow. Get right back on track immediately with your next meal. One high calorie meal and dessert won't wreck your weightloss plan unless you continue the trend. You will likely see an increase in weight the next morning but often the majority of that will be water weight from sodium. The body is great at trying to regulate itself.

I try and do the advance look-up thing, but otherwise will guesstimate because it's one meal and not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

I don't worry too much about dinning out because I know that pretty much every place has dinner salads. so if I can't find something with low calories like a vegetarian plate, I just order an ice tea and a dinner salad.

the best choice would be homemade food cooked from fresh ingredients. no need to count, just choose the wisest on menu and keep it to the minimum be well

I log as close as I can. I used to bring home half and weigh it before devouring at home just to keep honest. Now I take home half and have it for breakfast usually.

Most places have food that is salad with a meat - my go-to is Caesar salad with steak which is always tasty.

When I eat out I don’t log, which isn’t often (not my thing). Too many variables. That does not mean that you don’t have a reasonable idea of is this a real portion, is this a good choice, or do I even care.. make your choice, eat and enjoy the celebration and next day just continue on. Healthier choices most of the time, less healthy choices once in a while. An early Happy Birthday.

I eat what I want AND log. then adjust and be a little stricter the rest of the week (or the next week) if I have gone over my calorie goal by more than a couple hundred calories.

If I'm trying to stay under 1200 for the day, I eat minimal breakfast lunch and pedal 30 miles if possible to create a significant calorie deficit. To stay on plan, my go ros are a salad with a protein on it, preferably fish or shellfish and no dressing, cheese or croutons. 2nd choice is a seafood entre without cream sauce or cheese and served up on a bed of spinach. No rice or linguini. No vesuvio potatoes.

I call ahead and explain for health reasons I have a very restricted diet and will need a plate of steamed vegetables and a clean protein like a grilled chicken breast. If they can’t do it, i just order unsweetened ice tea or a diet soda with a side salad with no dressing (lemon) and eat before I go. I guessimate log - each palm area is a cup, each thumb index finger circle is 1/2 cup, thumb tip a tablespoon. Stay away from sauces and oils (oils can be good but it is a mystery at restaurants both in type and quanity. The second stradegy is reduce your calories in the days before by 300-500 and then just order still staying away from high sugar and fried foods. I still try to log. But this is your body and your life so you get to divid if it is worth it to play free and easy for one day or if you aren’t will to slow progress. Only you can know the mind body balance associated with this event. No matter what, next week right back into the game plan.
