I learn from everyone, including my Wife but she doesn't believe me. I used to be a eat the whole thing guy. I was raised to always clean my plate. My Daddy's favorite saying in the kitchen was, "Take all you want but eat all you take." Raised like that, I still clean my plate today. It's funny how those kind of things stick with you.

My Wife used to get to me by eating half a slice of bread, half a slice of bacon or a pinch off anything. I would ask her why and she would tell me that she got as much as she wanted. I used to look over at her plate and noticed that mine had twice and sometimes three times a much food as her. She has always been the healthy eating one in our marriage and she never had weight problem. It was also her that got me to realize the importance of fitness in our later years. When I first started walking with her, I could barely keep up. I used to train when she was busy so I could out do her. I later influenced her to do some light running.

Here's a good example of what I have learned from her. We have been eating this one lemon tart for two days. It has finally sunk in that I don't have to gobble down the whole thing every time. I would deny myself the pleasure of tasting one of my favorite desserts because the whole tart had too many calories. I had conditioned myself to eat it all or eat none. That was dumb. I placed the egg in the picture to show the scale of the tart. I guess old dogs can learn new tricks...

I was just relating the same thing to my hubby and kids the other day. We were always told to eat everything on our plate. Full? Didn’t matter. Eat the rest. Awful!! Just awful. I know the waste not, want not teaching well! But what’s wrong with leftovers? Man, our parents meant well but some habits I did not teach my own kids. And have had to try and reteach myself. Great post John. I can relate. 😊

Better in the trash or as leftovers than on your hips. :D

I think I finally got this through to my hubby as well. When you are just beginning to feel full, stop. He used to always have seconds and then he would be overfull later. Now he stops at one plate. 💜

Wow, great job! Having only a small piece is the hardest.

I was raised the same way on cleaning your plate. I struggle with leaving food on my plate, but I am getting better. Your doing awesome.

Love Trader Joe's lemon bites. Hard to stop once I start. Wasting food isn't the issue. Raw desire is. So for me "just say no!" works better. Compulsive personality sucks.

I have the same problem you describe. Still haven't conquered it. If I have a bag of chips or a pie, or cookies I can't think of anything else until I eat it all. I've tried freezing slices of pie, or individual cookies but then I keep going to the freezer. So for now I just can't have anything I'll overeat in the house. Some things I'm fine with (but not many). I had a box of Pop Tarts for about 3 months and only had them once in awhile. Regular "meal" food, I don't overeat. I know I'll only have one baked potato or one omelet.

Working on being more like your wife, LOL! That image above is terrific, sometimes a little bite or two is all we really need.

Your post is so great John!!! My hubby is like your wife and I used to eat what he didn't. Remember that kids rhyme Jack Spratt? LOL! I don't think I tasted half of my food because I'd wolf it down so fast! I really savor and enjoy every bite now. And though I'm eating less I enjoy it so much more now!!! And I freeze that whole box of donuts after he eats his 1/2 a donut!!! 😆

I love that La Madeleine has mini tarts that are a little over one inch in diameter. Guilt-free dessert.
