So I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly!! I'm just following the guidelines the app gave me but keep reading all these other things on here. Trying to drop about 20lbs. According to the app i should be creating a deficit at 1800 calories

Everyone is a bit different. Even 2 people the same height, weight and activity level. If 1800 doesnt work for you try a different #. I find the most important thing is being aware of what I eat.
