I WIN!!!

Kinda... sorta...

I just got back home from the 5K, and I blew my old personal best out of the water. Before this race my fastest time was about 28:00. Today I finished in 26:23. [edit: so my average speed was 8:29 minutes/mile]

Not only did I beat my old time, but I finished 3rd in my age group. This is the first time I've ever won a medal for being in the top 3. There was a photographer there, so whenever they put the pics up I'll try to post 'em here (or link to them).

Way to go! That's so exciting! I'm aging up this week - to a new age group. Too bad there are lots of FAST ladies over 50 in this area. I doubt I'll ever medal. I'm running a 5K tomorrow morning. It may not be my fastest since I ran 8.5 this morning. Again - WOOOOHOOOOO on your medal and PR!

Congratulations! That is a huge improvement over your last PR. What do you think made the difference? Was your last 5k before your 1/2 and marathons or more recent?

@erika: I ran 28:00 even on St. Paddy's Day this year.

@erika: To answer your other question... I just went all out. I normally reserve a lot during my races for a finishing kick, but I decided to just start fast and see how long I could keep it up. I'm not going to lie, it hurt... a lot. By mile 2 I had a stitch that wouldn't go away, and I felt like I was about to vomit. My last mile was a lot slower than my first two, but my overall time improved because of the early effort. A few steps after the finish line I just laid down on the sidewalk because I couldn't go any farther.

Yeah when I ran my 5k apparently the people who were the first to cross the finish line looked like they were about to keel over. I really think I pushed myself when I ran, but not to the point where I felt like I wanted to die lmao. One guy finished it in 15 minutes and some odd seconds. I have NO idea how that's even possible!

Thanks for the details. I was afraid that would be your answer. :)

/0 that is awesome!!! I'm so excited for you. I myself am hoping to get to 26 or 25 minutes in a 5k, soon. Way to go! Now when's the next race? I'm contemplating which next half marathon I'm gonna do...ugh.

/0, I need some advice. I am having a persistent problem of starting out much faster than I can maintain, even if I am trying to go slower. Today I did a dry run of my 5k plan which was basically to do a 10:30 first mile, 10 second and fast as possible on the third to hopefully come in under 30. The dry run was terrible--I ended up doing a 9 min first mile with a pace up to 7:30 for a few minutes. I nearly had a Biggest Loser treadmill moment and didn't even finish the 5k. I have done pretty much the same thing multiple times now and can't seem to stop. Any advice? Do I need to aim for a much much slower first mile and time bedamned?
